XIC Journalism & Media Convergence Students Visit Vidhan Bhavan

Students of Journalism and Media Convergence (Batch of 2026-27) visited Vidhan Bhavan on September 1, 2026 (situated in Mumbai) and were escorted by chief public relations officer, Nilesh Madane. This visit gave students an understanding about the history and functioning of Maharashtra’s legislature. Students also explored various spaces within the legislative complex. They learnt how the legislative system has evolved over the years. Mr. Madane started by explaining the significance of three primary circular halls.
He started with the Vidhan Sabha (Assembly hall) where the elected representatives conduct debates, discussion and pass laws. He elaborated on the various sections within the hall and explained the role of each stakeholder in the Assembly.
Then the students moved to Vidhan Parishad (Council Hall) and learnt how this house functions. Here, he also shared some historical anecdotes about political leaders and significant moments in Maharashtra’s political history.
After this session students were taken to the Central hall which is a common hall for both the houses. Mostly all the ceremonial events are hosted in this hall. He highlighted events like felicitation of Indian cricket players, Rohit Sharma and Surya Kumar Yadav after India won ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The last part of the visit was the press club. It was an interactive session, where students understood the importance of accuracy and context in political journalism. He elaborated on legislative proceedings, different sessions throughout the year, constitution of India and how democracy is still alive in our country.
Overall, the visit turned out to be insightful and students were delighted after the visit. It reinforced the role of journalists in observing, questioning and accurately communicating the functioning of public institutions to citizens.
