OBITUARY - Jane Swamy

Jane Swamy (1934-2020)

One of the stalwart and a former Dean of XIC, Jane Swamy, joined XIC as a faculty member in 1978. She was a Mass Media Professional & Practioner. Later she headed the Journalism & Public Relations Courses and has been instrumental in framing the very creative and original syllabus with Yale alumnus & Parsiana /Freedom First Editor, Jehangir Patel, of these Courses. XIC was running part time (evening) course then, Jane Swamy invited renowned Journalists, Industrialists from Corporates as guest faculty members to teach the students.  She was well versed with the current affairs of Media & the industry then and thus her students were updated.

A strict and disciplinarian teacher, Jane Swamy had the finer qualities of teaching. Her teaching style was unique. This brought in the best out of her students. Alumni wherever they are, always remember her as great teacher and faculty of XIC.

Jane Swamy had a Post-graduate Diploma in Journalism from Madras University and an M.A. (Journalism) from Marquette University, Wisconsin, USA.

On personal front, Jane Swamy  was one of  the 12 women, who were part of India’s first female delegation to a meet in USA in 1964. She was the first Woman Executive of Glaxo India, the first female President of the Association of Business Communicators, India.

Jane has had many careers. As a journalist, PR practitioner, TV broadcaster, documentary film maker, and an academician.

At XIC, she dedicated all of her time & energy teaching Post-graduate students the art of Mass Communication till 2012.

Later she was diagnosed with Alzheimer disease. She peacefully passed away on September 18, 2020 at her residence. She was 86 years old.
