Dr. Uday Nirgudkar discusses New Age Media with MCDM

On 21st June, the students of Mass Communication and Digital Media had the opportunity to attend a guest lecture by Dr. Uday Nirgudkar, spanning an intellectual discourse over relevance in new age media. With a commendable educational background and expertise in the field of IT, business, political marketing, and journalism, Dr. Uday Nirgudkar discussed politics, IT, and journalism with students. Quoting instances from his past experiences as the Chief Editor for Zee 24, to running his contemporary Youtube channel, Dr. Nirgudkar shed light on how new media has expanded the media industry in terms of accessibility, speed, and fact verification.
The lecture exposed the MCDM students to the nuances of editorial freedom and different journalistic roles, as Dr. Uday Nirgudkar narrated tales of investigative journalism with special emphasis on the role of a stringer. The lecture mapped out contrasts between traditional and new media- and a personality like Dr. Uday Nirgudkar who possesses experience in both, helped students analyze the traditional barriers that the new age media has broken, giving way to endless possibilities in journalism while also considering ethical challenges. Dr. Nirgudkar also heavily emphasized the need to find the truth. He encouraged students to engage with news and information actively, rather than believing in what “exists at the surface level.” Dr. Nirgudkar elucidated his remarks by drawing in examples from contemporary national and international affairs.
From discussing news consumption, fact verification, Dr. Nirgudkar’s self written books, and a lot more, the lecture was spread across for two hours, and concluded with an insightful question-and-answer session between the students and Dr. Nirgudkar. The takeaway for students was an educational insight in the field of journalism, inspiring them to take a bold step towards discovering the truth while adopting and maintaining ethical practices in their journalistic endeavors.
