What is News?
The course takes you through a brief introduction to Journalism,
the definition of news, and subjectivity in different newspapers.
The general parameters of judging the newsworthiness of an item,
as well as some practical aspects of the control of news in
newspapers are also covered.

Writing News
The student is taken through different ways of collecting news and
presenting it. This is followed by exercises to help the students
identify news wherever it may be found. A final section briefly
discusses the ethics of news presentation.
EFFECTIVE
PRESENTATION SKILLS
The
ideas in your mind should be presented in a way that is both
attractive and persuasive to those you relate to. This is
particularly important for people in management, teaching and in
public life.
This course will guide you through the principles involved in
understanding the issues concerning presentations; in preparing
yourself and the subject matter; in using visuals and in techniques
of delivery.
EFFECTIVE
WRITING SKILLS
A first impression increasingly determines what we read and what we
don't, and poor writing leads to a poor first impression.
The aims and objectives of this course are:
- To impart practical knowledge, skills and techniques of writing
effectively and professionally.
- To compose the various sections in official documents, and to
link these sections smoothly and effectively.
- To organise and present the material in a manner that will
assist the reader to follow and comprehend the
message easily.
MEDIA AND LAW
Defamation
is an occupational hazard that journalists should be especially
careful to avoid. It is based on the fundamental principle,
recognised by most legal systems throughout the world, that every
person is entitled to his or her reputation.
Indeed, the right to personal reputation is often given the same
legal protection as the right to personal property.
This course covers the ins and outs of the laws that are related to
defamation such as copyrights, contempt of court, constitutional
provisions, general laws, official secrecy, personal privacy,
parliamentary privileges, and self regulation.
SHORT STORY WRITING
What constitutes a good story, what pitfalls to be wary of, the
best way to go about writing short stories and how to market them is
what this module teaches you.
WHAT IS PUBLIC RELATIONS?
Public Relations evaluates public attitudes identifies the
policies and procedures of individual or an organization plans and
executes a program of action and much more in this course.
LANGUAGE APPRECIATION
This module aims to make the student:
Think and become aware of the effective use and power of
language.
Become a proficient user of the language.
