Post-Graduate Diploma Courses

What to
expect
Designed primarily for graduates who are planning a career in
the media, the courses attempt to go beyond skills and
techniques. Students are encouraged to question the social
framework within which the media operate. They offer a chance
for students to interact with distinguished media people -
journalists, filmmakers, critics, photographers, advertising and
publicity professionals - who form the teaching faculty at XIC.
In addition to classroom teaching, the
emphasis in these courses is on group projects, assignments and
independent research and study.
The Institute awards its own diplomas to students who
successfully complete course requirements.
One such requirement is compulsory attendance for all
lectures and group activities, factored into the Final Grade
Point Average.
For details of Course Schedules and Registration Fees, please
turn to the Admissions section.
The
Credit System
In course structure, XIC follows the Credit System. One
credit represents 10 hours of class time, or 5 sessions (of
2 hours each). Diploma courses average 80-100 credits, or
400-500 learning sessions in an academic year of ten
calendar months. This does not include individual study time.
Classes are held in 2 hour sessions commencing between 10a.m.
and 8.30p.m. Several courses have additional timings, e.g. on
Saturdays/Sundays. Please check the notice board each time.
The course load averages between two to
three sessions per day over a five-day week. When weekends
are taken for production and workshops, the weekly load is
accordingly adjusted.
For every hour of class time, a student is
expected to put in two hours or more daily, of private study by
way of reading, reflection, assignments, research or case study
and special projects.
To qualify for any one of XIC's six diplomas
a student should have successfully fulfilled the course
requirements: 75% attendance and an average grade 'C' in the
finals. This requirement is applicable to the certificate
courses as well.
From 2007 on, XIC offers some modules online
as supplementary teaching to all its students. Each online
module carries a value of 2 credits. These modules are
obligatory, and failure to complete them successfully will mean
failing the year.
Each online module is timed to expire after a
limited duration. If the student has not completed the module
during this time, or has failed to meet its passing requirements
of the course, a second chance is offered. If a student fails
the second time as well, the student will be deemed to have
failed the year.
The XIC offers no hostel facilities, and
out-of-town students must make their own arrangements. However
XIC helps students to locate safe and affordable accommodation.
Please enquire at the office.
A Word of
Advice
Diploma course work is demanding. Assignments, weekend
activities, field trips take more time and energy than students
anticipate. If it is difficult for you to make a year-long
commitment, it is advisable to opt for workshops or for
short-term courses. You may also register for our distance
education programme online,
www.telexic.com
where you can study at your own pace. Your gain depends largely
on your enthusiasm and initiative.
The diplomas and certificates it awards are
not ‘government recognised’ for public sector employment.
Nevertheless XIC students are much sought after by the media
industry, commer-cial corporates and non-profit organisations in
India and overseas.
Kindly Remember:
Any dispute between the Institute and its
students is subject to the jurisdiction of the courts in Mumbai
only. |

Please read the following FAQs carefully before applying.
-
Am I eligible to apply?
As all the courses are post-graduate, you must be a graduate (in
arts, science, commerce or social communications) with a grade
average of 55% or above to apply. As all the courses at XIC are
full time (approx. 6 class hours a day, 5 days a week), you may
not hold a job and attend classes at the same time. You may
apply for more than one course, but if you fail in a given
course during the entrance procedure, you may not re-apply for
it in the same year. If you are selected for more than one
course, you will have to choose which course you register for
when you pay your fees.
-
What is the entrance exam like?
The entrance exam consists of two levels. The first is a
written exam online lasting 60 minutes given you as
soon as you submit and pay for your application form. (Please be
ready for this. As soon as you make payment, you will be
examined.) You are tested on your English language skills and on
a general knowledge of that media subject which you have opted
to apply for. The online entrance exam may be taken at your
convenience and at any place between May 1 and May 31. After
this date the online exam is closed.
If you clear the online exam with a pass percentage of at least
55%, you are given a date to report to Xavier Institute of
Communications, Mumbai, for your interview and group
discussion. This date will be in the first three weeks of
June. Please keep two days free for both, and make your
reservations for stay and travel accordingly. If you fail to
turn up for the interview at the appointed time, you lose your
seat this year.
The interview takes between 10-15 minutes. It is meant to
test verbal fluency, clarity of thought/ expression, and to
check the candidate's academic and social background, as well as
motivation. Your original documents (see below) and a
portfolio of media work, if any, should be brought along.
(Advertising and Public Relations student applicants also have a
group discussion.)
The student applicant must bring these documents along for the
interview, and leave them with the Superintendent, General
Office:
1. Attested copy of the final year graduation mark sheet,
or a copy of the second year mark sheet in the case of
candidates awaiting their results.
2. Six passport size photographs ( 3 cm x 3 cm) with your name and identity number clearly written on the reverse.
3. You may also bring along (optional) a portfolio of media
work.
The names of those candidates who have successfully cleared the
interview and group discussion and are eligible for admission,
are put up on the notice board / website the next day. A waiting
list of second-choice candidates is also put up.
-
The academic prospectus
On arrival at XIC for the interview, each student is requested
to collect a free copy of the academic prospectus from the
general office, and to make herself familiar with it. (You will
be quizzed on its details during the interview.)
The academic prospectus contains three parts:
1. General information about the XIC and its
history; details about the management, faculty, staff and the
amenities available; the academic calendar; and XIC links with
other communication colleges.
2. Specific information about the courses, a
description of each module, and the academic requirements.
3. Student guidelines on behaviour on campus,
performance in the courses and grievance procedures.
Prior to the interview, students will have an induction session
conducted by the XIC faculty. Students (obligatory) and their
parents (optional) must be present for this.
When do I pay my fees?
The payment of fees completes the admissions procedure. Fees
must be paid in full within three calendar days from the
date of selection. Payment is made at XIC by DD in the name of
"Xavier Institute of Communications, Mumbai". No personal
cheques, and no cash, please.
Payments are also accepted in cash or by DD through any branch
of Axis Bank across India, payable at that particular branch.
Drafts to be made out in the name of "Xavier Institute of
