Istoria 2016 - The Filmy Cocktail

29-February-2016

Istoria- The Filmy Cocktail, an event conceptualized and organized by the Public Relations and Corporate Communications batch of 2015-16, took place in the college quadrangle on 28th February 2016. The theme for the event was created in an attempt to celebrate Bollywood and Hollywood cinema. Therefore, the performances and the content of the show was decided in accordance with the central idea of a fusion between both entertainment industries.

To further enhance the above aspect, an audio visual was made, containing a reenactment by our students of iconic scenes from famous Bollywood and Hollywood movies to help our audience understand the theme better.

The event flow consisted of 3 main acts:

1) Dance: After approaching several dance troops, the first act was a dance performance by Gang of Ace. It is currently headed by one of the former instructors from Shiamak Davar’s famous Institute of Performing Arts- Awez Darbar.

The troop specializes in Hip Hop and Indian dance styles which fitted our theme of a fusion. Therefore, their performance for the event was an amalgamation of famous Bollywood and Hollywood songs and their power housed dance moves.

 2) Panel Discussion: The second and most important act was the Panel Discussion. The theme chosen for Istoria worked to our advantage as our class had the chance to approach several well renowned and established personas from the film and entertainment industry in India. The panelist for the event were Atul Kasbekar(Indian Fashion Photographer and Bollywood Film Producer), Sahil Shah (a Comedian from East India Comedy), Anupama Chopra (Indian Author, Journalist and Film Critic), Raja Krishna Menon(Film Writer, Director and Producer), and Suchitra Pillai (Indian Actress, Model, Anchor and VJ). Due to the seriousness of the panel discussion, it was decided that having a professional compere the discussion would best suit the interests of the event.

For this, a well-known and renowned professional- RJ Suren from Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM was approached to compere the panel discussion for the event. He currently hosts several shows on the radio channel; one of them being independent (Mirchi Top 20) while the other with a co-host RJ Meera (The Meera and Suren Show). Along with the above, a framework and theme for the discussion was discussed and decided upon by the class which was shared with RJ Suren, therefore giving the discussion some direction and allowed for its smooth flow. The theme was Emerging Cinema Perspectives: The Deconstruction of Innovative Marketing and Digital Technology. The theme was chosen in an attempt to engage the audience in an intellectual manner. The discussion shed light on the current effects and influence of various digital and technological platforms on cinema and the constant shift in marketing strategies used in both Bollywood and Hollywood.

3) Band: The third and final closing act for the night was the band performance by Anand Bhaskar Collective. They are a growing band that performs in various cities all over the nation and was founded by Anand Bhaskar- a singer and song writer. The band falls within the genre of Alternative Rock and a fusion of Indian Classical elements, therefore fitting our requirements. For the event, they performed several famous Hindi and English covers and also some of their original songs.
