XIC is offering its PG Diploma in Film and Television production at the Lievensí Institute of Film and Electronic media (LIFE) Ranchi since 2011.
The objective behind starting this institute was to make this course more accessible to students of North, Central and eastern India, where institutes offering professional courses in this field are few. The special focus of XIC (LIFE) Ranchi since its inception has been on the Tribal population on Chhota Nagpur plateau and surrounding areas, who have little representation in the largely urban-centric media industry of India.
The PG Diploma in Film and Television Production is a 10-month course that trains students in film direction and television production. While the course content deals mostly with video (since the film industry is migrating to high-definition video), we also have exercises where students work on 35mm film.
The students also learn cinematography, editing, sound (digital audio production), media ethics, media research and aesthetics. Every student has to work on one news feature, two short films, an online multi-camera studio production and a social documentary during the course of the year.
A PG Diploma provides you with a professional training: one that includes a more hands-on approach, the advantage of learning from working professionals in the media and assistance in placements. The course is less than a year but it is both intensive and extensive and you will spend more time making films than writing papers and theses.
At XIC (LIFE), we have channelized all our resources towards creating an atmosphere where students learn the ways of the industry, they learn fast and they learn well. We have our own studio floor with a fully-equipped control room, using high-definition workflow; we have 12 edit suites using Final Cut Pro and Avid Media composer- the most widely used editing software, a sound studio where we professionally record music albums on Pro Tools HD and a high-definition multi-camera and switcher setup that we dismantle and assemble frequently while covering many important events in the city. And our students get to work on all this.
The visiting lecturers who teach at XIC (LIFE) are also visiting faculty at FTII, SRFTI and Marquette University, Winsconsin and include noted academicians and film-makers. The students are also guided by the permanent faculty on campus who work with them and guide them on their projects throughout the year.
The fees, starting July 2013 will be 2.46 Lakhs. Tribal students from Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhatisgarh and the North-east are entitled to a discount depending on their financial capacity.
