THE FIRST DECADE (1969 - 1979)

 

1969

  • ICA - Institute of Communications Arts established First Director, Fr. F.X.McFarland SJ

  • 2 years/4 semester evening classes for graduates began in journalism, radio, cinema and TV

  • We sadly announce the death of Fr. Francis Xavier (“Packy”) McFarland SJ. He passed away in the morning of Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003 at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital in the Bronx, N.Y.C. He was 84 years.

1971

Media Library begins with 600 titles, and rapidly grows to become the best media resource centre in town

1972

  • Public Relations and Advertising Courses introduced

1974

  • 1st Indian TV series on Adult Education Aisi Aksharen Melveen, a joint venture between ICA and Doordarshan

1976

  • ICA moves to the old college hostel on the campus and becomes XIC, Xavier Institute of Communications. 150 students on the rolls.

     

  • New Sound studio opened

1977

  • "Television for Adult Education" project XIC produces TV serial Dnyandeep for Doordarshan

1978

New director, Fr. Anthony D'Souza SJ takes charge, and Fr. Gerry D'Rozario SJ becomes the academic dean






XIC formulates a BA syllabus on communications for Bombay University, but it is not accepted

A photo darkroom, a mini theatre and a closed circuit BW television studio set up

1979

  • Fr. Gerry Rosario SJ becomes the new director

  • A 4-track sound studio is opened, and AV workshops with International Films, Los Angeles and GIFTS (India) are held

  • The Public Relations course under Anand Akerkar (1979-83) and the Advertising course under Aughi Dalton (1979-85), flourish with a record number of students.
