The Xavier Institute of Communications was set up in 1969. Today it ranks among the biggest non-government media centres in South Asia. More than 400 students enroll each year in Diploma courses in a variety of disciplines. A variety of specialized, short-term Certificate courses are also offered to media professionals, community workers, school teachers and children.

The alumni are well placed, both, in India and abroad. There is scarcely any area of media activity in which they have not made a mark. Mentioned below are a few of the many memorable events and achievements of XIC.

 
1969

XIC established on the campus of St. Xavier's College, Bombay, as "The Institute of Communication Arts". Its first director: Francis X. McFarland, S.J.
Evening certificate courses in TV, film language, journalism and public relations begun.

1974

In partnership with Bombay Doordarshan and the Bombay City Social Education Committee, a literacy organisation, XIC produces its first TV series on television and literacy, "Aisee Akshare Melveen".

1977

A second TV series is prepared with producer Akashanand "Dnyandeep". Also on literacy, it runs for several years.

XIC moves to its present location on campus under the direction of
Fr. Anthony D'Souza, S.J.

1980

Several audio-visuals made at XIC set a standard for scripting and visualisation. Among them: The Giving Tree; Thank You for Coming (on St. Francis Xavier); No Sugar Tonight (on drug addiction); Kahani Nahanachi (on sexuality and childbirth). Also produced was a workbook on communal stereotypes Partly True and Wholly False, and audio-cassette and street-plays on stories about women, Streekatha.

1987

The diploma courses in Journalism, Public Relations, Advertising and Film Production are enhanced with an Advanced Media Studies Programme, open to select students. A Sound Recording workshop is also introduced.

"Communication Challenges in Asia", a 2-day workshop on the theme of the New World Information and Communication Order at XIC, in partnership with WACC, London and AMIC, Singapore (March 20-21).

"House Journals for Editors", a 2-day workshop, in collaboration with PTI, New Delhi (April 9-10)

1988

Kurt Lewenhak, Visnews, London, conducts an advanced video workshop. Workshop in Video-Umatic production, and editing introduced.

1990

Three research papers are prepared and awarded at the first Advanced Media Studies Programme Convocation, July 25.

"Interpersonal Communication for Key Trainers", a 3-day workshop for the State Family Welfare Bureau, Pune.

1992

1st batch of 3D Computer Graphics Course. XIC was the first to realize the importance of computer education in communications. The course provided a technical overview, practical application and hands-on practice. At the end of the five week course, each group produces a 5-second animation sequence. (20 July 1991).

Fr. Joseph Velinkar, S.J. succeeds Fr. Gerry D'Rozario, S.J. as director.

1993

Five public service spots on "Communal Harmony" produced by the Film Students and accepted by Mr. C. Gurunath, Director of Doordarshan for telecast. (30 February 1993).

Workshop - "Imaging Technologies '93"
advanced computer animation & special effects (screening of "Fern Gully" ) by Jonathan Luskin, Industrial Light and Magic Ltd. - USA, conducted by the 3D Computer department of XIC. (April 5 & 6 1993).

National seminar - Media & National Unity in collaboration with AMIC - Singapore (19 & 20 July 1993).

Fr. Desmond D'Monte, S.J. succeeds Fr. Joseph Velinkar, S.J. as director.

1994

SILVER JUBILEE YEAR
Seminar - "Health Communications - An Asian Perspective" , in collaboration with Health Wrights (Dr. David Werner), Princeton Health Care Network & Consultancy, London (Dr. Francis Pinto), and World Health Organisation, Switzerland (Dr. Peter F. Beales),
(17 Nov 1995).

1995

Workshop: Radio Documentary in collaboration with Independent Broadcasting Asso. (Julian Crandal Hollick), USA, and MID-DAY, Bombay.

1996

A Management Advisory Board for XIC was formed - first Board Meeting - 24 July 1996.

Marathi Journalism Diploma course began on 2 Sept 1996. First batch - 12 students.

1997

On the sudden death of Fr. D'Monte in an accident (Oct.11),
Fr. Myron J. Pereira, S.J., takes up the directorship.

1998

The Digital Media Group of XIC was invited to Sheridan College, Toronto, Canada. Sheridan College is one of the foremost art and communication institutes in the world. During the visit several possibilities were looked into, viz., close interaction between the two institutions, involving the exchange of curricula, faculty and students.

Media World department held An All India Conference on Media Education "From Classroom to Public Campaign" on 2 & 3 Oct. 1998. Media persons from various media education centres across India attended.

The XIC Newsletter changed names from "Network" to "Xcell" in October 1998.

1999

XIC linked by E-mail and Internet.

XIC launches its web site on the Internet

2001

XIC started Xpress, a Placement Service.

Cartoon Network, Maurics (Mo) Willems, creator, writer and director of “Sheep In The Big City” a workshop for Digital Media students.

Inauguration 2nd Computer Lab - ten computers were installed.

2002

Inauguration of Cardinal Gracias Media Resource Centre by Former Librarian Elizabeth C. Braganza.

Telexic, Distance education online. First module News Reporting.

Film & Television Studio with state-of-the-art equipment inaugurated by Fr. Myron. J. Pereira, Director

All departments in the Institute were air-conditioned.

2003

First Directory was printed and distributed at the 33rd Annual Convocation.

Conversational English was taught to the XIC support staff.

XIC Gardens inauguration by the Rector, Fr. Rudolf Heredia.

First Announcing Broadcasting Comparing and Dubbing in Marathi (ABCD) Workshop.

2004

Ms Jane Swamy appointed Dean of Studies

Inauguration by Fr. Joseph M. Carsi SJ of the Computer Lab extension. Fr.Carsi, an architect, designed the place.

Advanced skills for BMM Studies Educators

2005

Inauguration by Prof. J.B. Mistry of the XIC Premises at St. Xavier’s High School Campus.

Deakin University of Australia, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Xavier Institute of Communications.

Inauguration of the 32-Track and 16-Track Sound Studios at the XIC School Campus.

2006

First Meeting on the International Standard Organization (ISO) certification for Evaluation of the Teaching System at XIC. Major General Ivan D’Cunha organized the programme.

First Alumni Meeting - Bangalore

2007

Job fair organized by Mrs. Norma Rego, Manager, Finance and Administration, through Xpress the XIC placement services. 95% students were recruited.

The first volume of the Creative Writing Monographs by student journalists of the years 2004-06, released by Eunice de D’Souza, poet, editor and columnist.

First Online Entrance Test for admissions to the academic year 2007-08, at the Attest Testing Centres all over India.

XIC and Toonskool Advanced Animation Academy, Bangalore, plan to conduct a one year diploma course in animation from June 2007.
