08-July-2016

Xavier Institute of Communications – XIC ORIENTATION DAYS

XIC’s 47th Academic year 2016-17 began with a well – planned Orientation for its students on June 30th and July 1st, 2016 in the St. Xavier’s College Hall. A fair amount of parents and guardians were present to share in the excitement their wards.

We at XIC decided on this appropriate theme for the coming Academic year : "Water Justice: Ensuring Equitable Access”. The Key-note speaker, Mr. Haribhai Mori, President, CSR, Lalitpur Power Generation Company Ltd, Bajaj Group, described how effective and cost-friendly water-conservation projects could be undertaken, in order to ease the burden of poor and struggling farmers. His experience of 26 years was reflected in his passion and zeal for innovative methods of increasing water tables in drought prone areas. The proof of success is evident in the effective work carried out by his team in the Wardha region. Hopefully, his sharing will have inspired us to realize the importance of discovering better water conservation methods not just at the grass-roots, where it is needed most, but also in urban India !

Dr J B Mistry, our creative and on-the-move Dean, made the student body aware of certain parameters within which XIC can bring out the best from these eager minds. There was no mincing words to describe the challenges ahead !

Course Heads and the Course Coordinators added to the already long list of responsibilities expected from this batch of 2016 – 2017. Some XIC Alumni – who have made a mark in varied media industries - generously made time to meet the eager new students in groups. The whole truth, the reality of life in the world of media was laid bare before them. The final take? No rosy pictures... no miracles waiting to happen! Their simple advice ? Sheer dint of hard and regular work and taking advantage of the experienced visiting faculty, will go a long way in turning them into the much sought after XIC ‘professional’ product !

Day Two had interesting ‘Classroom Survival’ sessions conducted by Fr. George Rosario SJ, Asst. Director, Snehasadan. And special ‘Ice Breaking’ sessions introduced by Fr. Gordon Daniells SJ, Head, Corporate Extension Services, XIC, did just that – helped students coming from all the nooks and corners of our country to break ice – making them aware of the complexity of our great India ! .

Before Fr. Errol Fernandes SJ, Vice Principal, Commerce Section, St. Xavier’s College, took centre stage to share his passionate presentation and overview of the ‘Jesuit Ethos’, the Director of XIC, Fr. Lawrie SJ conducted a ‘summing-up’ session. Aided by short films and music clips he very sensitively touched upon the daily routine and the challenges to be faced in the coming 10 months, by this new batch of approximately 255 eager ‘communicators’! We collectively say :WELCOME to Xavier’s – it’s not just a college… it’s a way of life…it’s a Jesuit Institution, it is ‘where potential becomes achievement’! Keep flying !
