XIC ICRC Media Workshop

"Ethics of Reporting in Situations of Emergencies"

Xavier Institute of Communications and International Committee of the Red Cross, New Delhi organised a Media Workshop on ‘Ethics of Reporting in Situations of Emergencies’, on Tuesday 8th December 2015 at The West End Hotel, Mumbai, where about forty people participated.

The ICRC is an independent, neutral organization ensuring humanitarian protection and assistance for victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence. It takes action in response to emergencies and at the same time promotes respect for international humanitarian law and its implementation in national law.

The aim of the workshop was to discuss

• Ethics of Conflict Reporting in Situations of Emergencies including Natural Disasters

• Basic tips of how to cope in such emergency situations.

The interactive workshop truly benefitted all the participants due to the presentations, discussions and experience sharing by senior journalists in the field.

The Chief Guest for this event was Mr. Vishwanath Sachdev, Senior Journalist and editor, ‘Navneet’. Mrs. Homai Modi, Honorary Secretary The Red Cross Society, Maharashtra was the Guest of Honour.

Senior journalists Ms. Meena Menon, Ms. Dipti Raut and Mr. Sudharak Olwe, shared their experiences in emergency situations.

Ms. Meena Menon in her address gave a first-hand account of her experience during the 1993 Latur Earthquake in Maharashtra.

Ms. Dipti Raut talked about challenges faced by TV journalists.

Mr. Sudharak Olwe spoke extensively about the limits that a journalist must keep in probing on sensitive issues about the victims and their kin in instances of riot or disaster.

Pannelists consisted of Mr. Surinder Oberoi, Political & Communication Advisor, ICRC and Mrs. Homai Modi Honorary Secretary, The Red Cross Society, Maharashtra.

The concluding session was conducted by Mr. Jehangir Patel, Editor Parsiana and senior faculty at XIC, this included Q & A.

The organisers and participants intend to follow-up with more such interactive workshops and also training of field journalists in emergency situations.
