45TH ANNUAL CONVOCATION

The 45th Annual Convocation for the Academic year 2014-15 of Xavier Institute of Communications was held on April 24, 2015 in the quadrangle of St. Xavier’s College Campus. Being the 45th year, a few enhancements were in place.

Fr. Lawrence Ferrao SJ, Director of XIC welcomed the audience, comprising of students, parents, friends, faculty, Course Heads and Staff of XIC. Our Chief Guest for the evening was Ms. Shiraz Prabhu, XIC Alumnus, Senior Social, Political Activist; our Guest of Honour was Dr. Fr. Paul Fernandes SJ, Vice Chancellor, Xavier University, Bhubaneswar. We had great comperes in Romeo Monteiro, Head of Computer Dept., and Vaishali Deshpande, in-charge, Alumni Relations.

The ‘Best Student of the Year’ was awarded to Sahil Singh of the Journalism and Mass Communication Course. In his acceptance speech, Sahil quoted Albert Einstein, "Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything we learn in school”. We presume that XIC has given this year’s lot a lot of learning experiences, which will help in the years ahead!!

Dr. Jehangir B. Mistry, Board Member and Dean of XIC highlighted XIC achievements in the review of the Academic year 2014-15. The screening of "The Year That Was” with short clippings of events and documentaries of the entire academic year were screened amidst loud cheers from the students of the respective courses.

Our unique Ignatian Award is awarded to one who exemplifies good Academic, Social and Spiritual values as per the tradition of the Jesuit ‘MAGIS’. This year too, the second since its introduction, the award deservedly went to a student to the Communications for Development (C4D) Course, Ms. Rucha Satoor!

Ranjana Kacker Memorial Awards

The family of the late Ranjana Kacker, an Alumnus of XIC 1979 Journalism batch has set up awards for Journalism students, in her memory. The awards were presented by her daughter Ms. Ruchi Bahree.

"Outstanding Research Papers in Journalism for the year 2013-2014” was awarded to B.H.Harsh.

The Award for Best Broadcast TV News Production went to "ASM India News " Team members - Shivangi Acharya, Aakansha Agarwal, Shruti Anand, Vernika Awal, Yash Jain, Aishwarya Sawarna and Angad Singh Thakur

The Award for Best Video Documentary Production went to "Mumbai Misal" Team members - Fatema Arif, Souvik Das, Sapna Mathur, Sukriti Mathur, Harsh Pareek, Jyoti Poonia and Aeina Yogesh.

Prakriti Award for Best Web Project (JR) to Varsha Meghani, JR 2015.

PRactice Strategic Communication Award for the Best Student in Public Relations & Corporate Communication to Marcelo Azvedo, PR 2015.

2nd Best All Round Student in Public Relations & Corporate Communication to Archita Khanna, PR 2015.

Sanskriti Award for Best Web Project (PR) to Sakshi Bhalla, PR 2015.

Select Direct Marketing Award for the Best Students in Advertising & Marketing Communication to Aditya Pattanath, AM 2015.

S.S. Oberoi Award for the Best Student in Film, Television & Digital Video Production to Karan Machado, FTV 2015.

The late Ignachimuthu Pillai award instituted by Mrs. D. Amalorpavam for the Best Student in Broadcast Journalism to Aishwarya Mohanty of LIFE.

The late Ignachimuthu Pillai award instituted by Mrs. D. Amalorpavam for the Best Student in Film & Television, Ranchi was a tie, and was awarded to Vrishank Mahatme and Swetha Vilvaraj of LIFE.

Award for the Best Audio-visual Social Documentary in memory of late Mr. Hrishikesh Mukherjee - "The Silent Epidemic”, to the team members (XIC FTV 2015), Manpreet Singh Chadha, Bobby Khurana, Tyrel Lyngdoh, Jagdish Mishra, Arushi Sharma and Huzaifa Vakharwala.

Award for the Best Audio-visual Social Documentary - "Superstitions in Jharkhand”, to the team members (XIC Ranchi 2015) Manisha Sinha, Mihir Joshi and Nitish Sharma.

Award for the Best Ad Film sponsored by Ahuja Constructions – "Sona Mattress”, to the team members (ADMA 2015), Yash Modi, Karan Singh Thapa, Pooja Sharma, Nerissa Maria Moraes, Chriselle Ann Baptista, Vivek Nagarajan, Piyush Jaiswal, Ashwin Pinto, Mahesh Kantheti and Madhura Athanikar.

1st Runner-Up Award for their Ad Film - "Parody Mirrors", to team members (ADMA 2015) Dhwani Maheshwari, Maclina Lopes, Vandana Menon, Sakina Bagsarwala, Samannay Saha, Daniel D’Abreo, Scott Tellis, Mansel Alvares, Ravi Raj and Sarah Nicholas.

2nd Runner-Up Award for their Ad Film - "Tangy Ketchup", to team members (ADMA 2015) Neville Rodrigues, Tanushree Sinha, Pragya Thakur, Rahul Kumar, Chaarvee Kumar, Abhishek Pandey, Swati Singh, Akanksha Singh, Sita Vaddadi and Apratim Bhatnagar.

Also felicitated on the same day, was Fr. Gordon Daniells SJ. Besides serving XIC creditably for 21 years he also has triple celebrations this year: 80th birthday. 50 years in the Jesuit Society. And 40 years a Priest. Well known and appreciated as a Soft Skills trainer, he doubles up as a student councillor too, known for his patient, listening ear.

The Convocation Ceremony ended with Sandra Rana, thanking the entire team of XIC who were guided by the meticulous planning of XIC Administrative head, Ms Radha. It is this spirited assistance and dedication of Team XIC which made Convocation Day memorable.

The singing of the XIC Anthem once again was a fitting finale to this XIC Convocation in its 45th year.
